Note: Want your own shortcut? Mail me at  jan@keyrocket.com!

Wouldn’t it be great if we could have custom shortcuts for the things that we do often?
Here’s a prime example for such a bugger.

Rob Moffat pointed out to me that he often receives financial models (excel files) that contain hidden worksheets, and went on to say “you don’t understand a model until you see all the hidden sheets, do you?”. So he finds himself unhiding sheet after sheet over and over again either with the mouse:

  1. Right-click in the worksheet area to bring up the context menu
  2. Select “Unhide…”
  3. Click OK

Or with the keyboard sequence Alt > H > O > U > H + Enter.

All these actions (3 clicks or 5 keystrokes for each sheet) because Microsoft forgot to put in a function to unhide all sheets at once? Doesn’t sound convenient? No it isn’t.

When asking Google we find that there are some Do-It-Yourself solutions (with Excel VBA Macros or AutoHotKey scripts) available. Sound convenient? Not really.

So what’s the ideal solution?

  1. From your behavior, KeyRocket understands that you click “Unhide…” often
  2. KeyRocket suggests that you choose a custom shortcut to “Unhide all sheets” for example Ctrl+Shift+Alt+U
  3. KeyRocket provides the shortcut (no additional installation of macros or add-ins)
What do we have so far:

  1. From our database of feedback data (shoutout to hadoop: getting close to a billion rows :-) I  identified the Top 5 users of “Unhide”, I emailed them and one got back in less than an hour (Hi Eric :-)
  2. I wrote a tiny C# Application that sets a global hotkey Ctrl+Shift+Alt+U to unhide all sheets in the active excel application (should work for Excel 2010, 2013 in all languages)
  3. Download Keyrocket_Excel_Unhide_All_Sheets and put it in autorun or run it manually when you need it (this doesn’t have any interface, if you want to exit it for any reason use the task manager)
  4. To try it,  open any worksheet with hidden worksheets (or hide some) and then press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+U.

If you use the tool: I need your feedback! When everything goes well we will integrate the shortcut directly into KeyRocket.

That’s it, one shortcut closer to maximum productivity for every computer user on the planet!

If you can see the beauty of this, but can’t wait until we have the custom shortcuts in KeyRocket shoot me an email to jan@keyrocket.com and I’ll implement your custom shortcut as another case study!

Twitter for Business

The business landscape is constantly changing. A major part of worldwide companies are now using different forms of digital and social media strategies. We have already deep into some productive tips for company profiles in LinkedIn. But when we’re talking about social media, we can’t help but talk about Facebook and Twitter.

For this article we wanted to focus on Twitter for business so you can use a company Twitter account more effectively, increase followers and your business be better heard in the social media space. To do so, we compiled some of the strategies that Kevin Rose, the founder of the tech startup digg.com, took to reach about 1.3 million followers on Twitter plus a few essential business tips to get out more of  Twitter service.

1. Completely fill in your bio. Your tweets and @replies won’t mean much to people who don’t know you. Your bio is the only place in Twitter where you can tell people who you are, and it also appears on Twitter’s suggested user’s page. Leaving this part blank or non-descriptive won’t do much in encouraging people to follow you.

2. Write valuable tweets. Tweet something that is valuable to your followers. According to a study about what people like to read on Twitter, tweets that were labeled “worth reading” fell into four categories: Informative, Funny, Useful, and Exciting. So as long as your tweet falls into one of those categories, you have a good shot of your tweet being noticed and retweeted. It is also very important that you don’t annoy your followers. Avoid sending cryptic tweets, repeating old news, tweets with too many # and @ signs, links without commentary, and of course, boring tweets.Source: Aworldoftweets.com

3. Encourage re-tweets. Teach your followers all about re-tweeting and encourage them to re-tweet your links. This particular activity places your @username into the social graphs, which results in clicks back to your profile. You can also bookmark your content through tools like Su.pr, and track your retweets by using retweeting. According to Gary Vaynerchuk, putting links to your Twitter profile everywhere (Digg, LinkedIn, Facebook, blog, email signature…) will be really useful to increasing traffic to your account. Check out cool feedburner like badges from TwitterCounter for your blog.

4. Use #hash-tags. Hash tagging your company’ s interests and passions helps people find your quality easily. And if people find value in your content, they will definitely follow you. In addition, by replying to #hash tag memes you can stay active. Search.twitter.com lists the hot trending topics. Look for the #hash topics and jump in on the conversation.

5. Use Twitter shortcuts. Fortunately, keyboard shortcuts are also available in social networks. As shortcuts fans, we have already compiled ‘Top 10 Twitter Shortcuts‘ so your work on Twitter goes as quickly and easy as your work in Office, Windows and Gmail does with KeyRocket shortcuts

6. Bring your Twitter account into the real world. Wherever you go, if you give a talk, speak to a panel, present slides, or hand out a business card, make sure you display your twitter account. This makes it easy for people you meet to add you immediately.

7. Take pictures and start a contest. Images are largely re-tweeted and generally spread faster. For mobile pics use iPhone apps such as Tweetie which supports on the go uploading. In addition, contests will encourage people to add you just to be eligible for whatever prize that you’re offering.

8. Follow smartly. Since follow someone means that their tweets will show up on your homepage, you should be selective with them and always think that quality is over quantity. Twellow.com helps you sort Twitter profiles by industry while Twitterpacks let you find and add content by topic, location, company or events. Of course, don’t forget to keep following your top Twitter users closely to observe what they tweet. Pay attention to the type of content they post and also how they address their audience.

9. Use Twitter like a helpdesk. Provide and engage tech support via simple tweets or direct messages is easier and faster. Furthermore, you can even provide your support via Twitter to people who aren’t your real customers yet. There are a lot of free tools to manage customer service interaction in Twitter: Tweetdeck, HootSuite, Tweet2Tweet and InboxQ are just some examples.

10. Always keep an eye on your results. Use TwitterCounter to show you how many users you’re adding per day, and Qwitter to let you know when someone unfollows you after a tweet.

At KeyRocket we want to bring maximum productivity and typing is a large part of it. In the last days three interesting things happend:

  • KeyRocket users would love to type faster – when asked what they like to see next in KeyRocket the winner by an amazing lead (20% click rate) was “Increase your typing speed”
  • Plateau - Really slick typing trainer (forked from Keyzen, HN Discussion)
  • Kung Fu Typing – a great blog post visualizing different finger movement for different typing techniques (HN Discussion)
I’m gathering ideas how we can bring you a daily dose of typing training by limiting the amount of time you can train (3-5 minutes is my guess) and making it fun to watch you progress with stats. If you have ideas let us know!

Google Search Commands
Who hasn’t used Google Search? And who hasn’t ever wished to have the power to eliminate half of the useless results? Before you search for ‘How to delete undesirable Google results’, keep reading to find out how you can clean up your Google searches and save time.

Worldwide Search EnginesGoogle search is the preferred tool among Internet users. It tracks an average of 4,717,000,000 queries per day and sends more than 80% of all traffic to websites around the world. In front of those statistics, we can assume that almost everything that is happening in the Universe can be googled… but, unfortunately, we can’t always find it out quickly and easily.

Don’t underestimate simplicity. That Google Search box offers more features than it seems! Making advanced and professional searches is one of them. Everything you need to do is pick the keyword that defines what you’re searching for and add a Google Command.

Google Commands are quick keys or shortcuts used to narrow down your search and get closer results to your query. As with KeyRocket shortcuts, the only thing you need to use is the keyboard. By using some of these Google Search Commands, you will be able to find what you are looking for in half of the time. Searching like a pro.

 1. BASIC SEARCH
  • Exact expressions: ["keyboard shortcuts"]. Enclose the words you are looking for between quotation marks will give you only the results that contain that exact phrase, and excluding, for example, results only about keyboards.

  • Multichoice search:  [keyboard hotkeysORshortcuts]. That will return results which contains both keyboard hotkeys and keyboard shortcuts. You can also use the vertical bar | (AltGr or right Alt + 1) to get the same results: [keyboard hotkeys|shortcuts].

  • Add and subtract words [iPhone apps +free -games]. You can use the symbols + and – when you want to insist in a word or omit it in the search

  • Include similar words: [windows ~hotkeys]. The modificator symbol ~ (AltGr or right Alt + 4) can be useful when you want to extend the search to other synonyms of the word you are looking for. In the example, you’ll get Windows hotkeys but also Windows shortcuts, Windows shortcuts keys, etc.

  • Search a definition: [define:shortcut]. Don’t waste time looking for a dictionary! By typing the command [define:] you will get the meaning, and the pronunciation, instantly.

2. SPECIFIC SEARCH
  • Search for a file: [productivity statistics fyletipe:pdf]. If you need to sort your results by type of file, this is the command that you have to use.

  • Search for a range date: [dell computers 2010..2012]. To narrow within a period of time.

Search in Site
  • Search in one place of the website: [inurl:shortcut] [intitle:shortcut] [inanchor:shortcut] [intext:shortcut]. These commands let you find what you are looking for in a specific place of the site: in the url address of the page, in the text of the title page, in the text of the links (anchor) or only in the main text.

  • Based the search only in some sites: [productivity apps site:www.download.com]. That will return only the pages hosted on download.com about productivity apps.

  • Make a calculation: [4+2-1*5/3]. Just use the common punctuation to make basic calculations: + to add, – to deduct, * to multiply, / to divide, and then press enter to get the final result.

  • Search social tags and trending topics: [@shortcuts] [#shortcuts]. These two symbols, @ and #, let you get quick access to the latest mentions and news of the topic on social networks.

  • Search for links: [link:www.keyrocket.com]. Useful for SEO, this command not always gives a complete list of results though. You can employ it when you need to estimate how many backlinks one website has.

3. ALTERNATIVE SEARCHES
  • Search based on images. You probably already know Google images search, but maybe you haven’t ever pressed on the camera icon and see what happens! Instead of looking for imagesGoogle Images

based on text, you can upload a picture or just copy its url. You will get more information about that image, a higher resolution of the same one, its original source and similar pictures. Simply awesome!

  • Search based on voice. Forget about writing and use your voice to get results even faster. Just press the microphone icon once you are in Google search main page and clear your voice.

  • Search graphs from equations. Anytime you need the visual representation of a formula, type [graph for] and then the equation. Google search draws it for you.

 HINTS:

-          Be careful with spaces when you use commands. You don’t need to put space after colon or any other punctuation, just write the word without space.

-          Google Search engine does not give different results if you type either cap or lower cases.
